I had a salesman at Fry's give me a run down on the 740, but it was only available online. I'm not sorry I took his advice. Great screen, tough sensitivity is excellent. It is a huge learning curve from a Garmin. Voice commands are surprisingly easy. The features are not matched anywhere in the Garmin lineup. Least cost fuel on route is excellent (if sometimes misdirected), particularly with the ability to select fuel choice including Diesel. Traffic updates are spot on versus with the Garmin.
Now the bad side. It only reacts with a manual switch whereas each of my other GPS units can be wired to the acc switch and start and shutdown with the vehicle. The up side of this being that you can carry it in you pocket and use it as walking guidance.

I'll vouch for the reviewers who say Tomtom has muddy looking screen, mushy touch, horrid UI that takes 5 clicks to get anywhere, the unit resets itself on occasion, etc. I was formerly a owner of a Tomtom Go 720 which I updated to enable IQ Routes and absolutely loved it, it was like driving with a local that knew all the shortcuts around heavy traffic areas. Well that broke (my fault) and on advice of almost everyone I got a Garmin (1490T) Hardware and UI wise the Garmin is a Rolls Royce compared to the Tomtom. Plus everyone said the maps were more accurate and it had faster routing. Well that simply wasn't true, the maps were inaccurate telling me to make left hand turns on main artery that hasn't allowed left hand turns since before I was born. It would take you the long way around to get the destinations and it was stubborn about re-routing. The Tomtom on the other hand has the awesome IQ Routes as I mentioned above, if I'm driving in an area I'm familiar with the Tomtom would take me the way I would go without it. The Garmin would take me into rush hour traffic. Plus I'm currently using my 3 month free subscription to Live services. You can tap the screen and see all the traffic delays on your route and it's automatically always checking for faster routes, it will pop-up say say "We found a route that's 15mins faster" Very cool.

Pros:
The routes and calculations are generally precise and accurate.
Compared to previous GPS units I have owned the rerouting is very fast.
The Live features are handy and well implemented, I particularly like the Google Local Search.
The touchscreen is accurate.
The Human Voices are a great novelty, I enjoy getting my instructions from Yoda.

Cons:
While the screen is readable in direct sunlight it does get a bit more washed out than other GPS units I have used.
TomTom's customer support leaves a lot to be desired. They are slow to respond to emails (a week so far with no reply in my most recent ticket) and phone support is hit or miss depending on who you talk to.
